Who invented the lollipop machine? What makes a lollipop?

Lollipop machine have been around for centuries, with variations of this sweet treat dating back to ancient Egypt. These early lollipops were simple candies made from honey and juice. They usually came on a stick, like the lollipops we know today. However, the process of making lollipops is laborious and time-consuming, limiting their production and availability.

It was not until the late 19th century that a breakthrough was made in the production of lollipops. The invention of the lollipop machine revolutionized the industry and allowed the mass production of this beloved candy. While the exact origins of the lollipop machine are debated, its impact on the candy industry is undeniable.

Samuel Born is a name often associated with the invention of the lollipop machine. Born was a Russian immigrant to the United States and a pioneer candy maker and businessman.  In 1916, he founded the Just Born Candy Company, which later became famous for its production of Peeps marshmallows and other desserts. Although Born himself did not invent the lollipop machine, he played an important role in its development and proliferation.

Another name that often comes up when discussing the invention of the lollipop machine is George Smith. Smith was an African-American who is credited with inventing the modern lollipop in 1908. He reportedly named it after his favorite racehorse, Lolly Pop. While Smith's invention was an important step forward for lollipop production, it didn't fully automate the process. It was not until later improvements to his design that the lollipop machine we know today was born.

The first lollipop machines resembled a large pot with a rotating stick in the middle. As the stick spins, the candy mixture is poured over it, creating an even coating. However, the process is still manual, requiring operators to constantly pour the mixture onto the wand. This limits production capabilities and makes it difficult to obtain consistent results.

In the early 20th century, technological advances led to the invention of the automated lollipop machine. The exact inventor of this machine is unknown, as there were multiple individuals and companies working on similar designs at the time. However, their collective efforts resulted in a series of innovations that transformed the lollipop making process.

One famous inventor of this period was Howard Bogart of the famous candy machinery manufacturer Thomas Mills & Bros. Company. Bogart patented several improvements to the lollipop machine in the early 1920s, including a mechanism that automatically poured the candy mixture onto the lollipops. These advancements significantly increase production capabilities and make processes more efficient.

As lollipop machines became more widely adopted in the candy industry, other companies and inventors continued to make improvements. One of these inventors was Samuel J. Papuchis, who patented a lollipop machine in 1931 that included a rotating drum and a System for releasing lollipops from molds. Papuchis' design introduced the concept of mass-producing lollipops in various shapes and sizes.

Over the years, lollipop machines have continued to evolve to meet the growing demand for these much-loved snacks. Today, modern lollipop machines are capable of producing thousands of lollipops per hour with minimal human supervision. They use advanced technology such as computer control and high-speed rotating molds to ensure consistent quality and efficiency.

The following are the technical parameters of the lollipop machine:
